And Raya does find Sisu a very innocent, scatter-brained dragon with a limited understanding of people. Raya no longer believes in peace she just desperately hopes Sisu and the orb can save the DruunвЂ™s victims, including her father. But sheвЂ™s also seeking Sisu, the dragon that wielded the orb centuries ago, and whoвЂ™s rumoured to be still around. What IвЂ™ve described covers the first twenty minutes of a 95-minute film, excluding credits.ДЄ quest followed, with an older, angrier Raya travelling the lands, looking for the pieces of the orb. The Druun monsters catastrophically return, laying waste to all around themвЂ¦ and then thereвЂ™s a six-year time-skip to the story proper. Namaari betrays Raya, leading to a battle where HeartвЂ™s orb is broken. Raya and Namaari are both dragon nerds, and at first it seems the story will be about the girlsвЂ™ friendship. During this time, young Raya bonds with Namaari, heiress to Fang, one of the other lands. RayaвЂ™s father invites delegates from them all to a feast, hoping for peace and unity. Thanks to its possession of the Orb, Heart is viewed with suspicion by its neighbours. Heart is the resting place for a giant orb thatвЂ™s the last remnant of the dragons, who are seemingly no more. The second prologue introduces us to Raya, daughter of the chief in Heart, one of five lands sundered in the earlier battle. The colourful 2D style of this sequence, with characters like jointed puppets, recalls the indie animation of Nina Paley вЂ“ hereвЂ™s an (adult) sample of her work. Benign serpentine dragons save humanity from shapeless cloud monsters called Druun, which turned their victims to stone. The first prologue involves a centuries-old magic war. Raya has two backstories, though theyвЂ™re delivered painlessly for how that kind of storytelling can go wrong, see DisneyвЂ™s megaflop John Carter. The film is also loaded with much more backstory than most Disney cartoons, though the Frozen films went heavy. ThereвЂ™s no apparent love interest for the heroine, though thereвЂ™s already hooha on that front вЂ“ weвЂ™ll get to that later. There are no songs, and lots of fighting. ThereвЂ™s comedy, of course, but it serves the action and itвЂ™s markedly less goofy than most Disney toons.

Raya is a down-the-line action-adventure fantasy, which is itself unusual for a Disney animation. The film will be available to standard subscribers on 4th June.
